Chibozu Community Trust Chibozu Community Trust is a not-for-profit organisation,
registered with the Charity Commission in UK, charity number 1149318.
Our Charity has been working with Simooya rural community in Pemba District in
Southern Province, Zambia where Simooya community members have been
committed and instrumental to projects with the help of Trust in improving access
to basic healthcare in Simooya and in the surrounding areas projects that has
included developing a local health facility and a well-respected school with 560
pupils who are aged between 4-15 years that serve a population of around 4000.
The community of Simooya and surrounding have been for year self-sufficient in
food security by growing their own white maize grain as staple food. Unfortunately
in the 2023/ 24 rain season the country Zambia has experience server drought
result to failed harvest in Southern Province and other provinces resulting for the
President of Zambia Government on Thursday 29 th February 2024 announcing a
national State of Disaster and Emergency .
Simooya Village has also experienced a failed maize harvest and will rely on buying
in maize from outside until next year’s harvest. With food prices high, and their
source of income vastly depleted, many community members face very real
prospects of starvation. Villagers are still managing to grow small amounts of
cabbage, onions, and beans at the riverside, but these are seen as supplementary
to a staple meal.
Chibozu Community Trust is seeking funding to support education initiatives in Zambia’s
Simooya area and surrounding villages to be used to enhance education opportunities for
children by providing them with one day meal while at school. .
We are asking for donations of upto £5000 for Simooya drought relief. This will allow the
School management and villagers to buy enough maize from the Government Food
Reserve Agency to provide a free daily meal of maize porridge, supported by locally
grown beans and vegetables, to every pupil in the school for about 6 months. (WHO
figures for maize consumption, maize reserve price 330Kw for 50kg).
